Crewel is on Target in their Red Hot Shop online
Alpine, TX August 20, 2004 -- Wool & Hoop Ltd. Co., a new craft manufacturer in Alpine Texas, has joined up with retailer Target's (NYSE: TGT) online Red Hot Shop to offer crewel embroidery kits. Crewelwork is free-form stitching of wool on linen that is gaining popularity in the United States.
The sew-it-yourself crewel kits from Wool & Hoop have taken an old needlework tradition and updated it with modern, upscale flair. The Red Hot Shop via Target is a specialty online boutique that features a weekly crop of new and interesting items available for a limited time.
Crewelwork has been practiced by crafters in the United Kingdom and Australia for centuries and is enjoying a resurgence in the United States. Hot on the heels of other craft trends, crewel embroidery has begun appearing in many products. Artist Katherine Shaughnessy of Wool & Hoop has re-energized crewel kits in America with sleek, new designs, but has kept the rich fabrics and traditional stitches of ancient crewel.
The one Wool & Hoop crewel embroidery style currently being offered by the Red Hot Shop is "Love Loops," which the Red Hot Shop describes as "lopsided pink and fuchsia loops cropped in a soft brown border" that is "a novel twist on the ages-old craft." The Red Hot Shop is the first retailer to aim the kits at beginners by bundling an embroidery hoop with every kit. "Love Loops" is being sold at the Red Hot Shop for $14.99.
Wool & Hoop made its debut earlier this year with five cool designs. The Wool & Hoop kits feature the finest Appleton Wools, Ulster Linens, a chenille needle, and hand-drawn instructions - along with a bonus greeting card and envelope, for displaying the finished 3" x 3" piece. The Red Hot Shop version also includes a 5" embroidery hoop.
